So it's January, I still can't believe it's 2022 and a new year. After scrolling through Instagram I noticed many people have made new year's resolutions to read - lots of books. I even thought I would read many books but as of this moment I'm stuck in a slump. To be honest I've even found myself in an Instagram slump but here are some tricks that have helped me out in the past.
1) Read a different book
This one is cliche however it does work, as when I've been stuck on one single book it's nice to change it up. I quite like it also when the book is a totally different genre from the one that caused the slump.
2) Go do something totally different
For me this one has helped out due to the fact I have autism. Now all of us overthink everything and I try to do everything, all the time. I end up having to watch movies or building miniatures. At the moment I'm watching criminal minds and I always read after as my brain enters that inquisitive stage.
3) Listening to music while reading
I'm not sure how helpful this one is to people, however I like to listen to instrumental music while reading. I think it depends on how you are feeling but music can definitely help. Honestly I have so many different playlists of book soundtracks based on the blurb, reviews and just music I think will work.
4) Try an audio book
I like this one when I'm reading in my head and the voice doesn't sound quite right. That has led me to quite a few slumps as it's a downwards spiral from there. I really enjoy a well read audio book as they can transport you into a book. I also think an audio drama might be a good bet for you if you enjoy sensory stimulation.
5) Book Adaptations
Now if you’re like me and want to read a book before watching the movie but are in the mist of that dreaded reading slump, watch the movie. The movie might give you that all important boost to read the book. This worked for me with Dune as I really enjoyed the 1970’s movie, and then wanted to read the books as they give more details of the world.
Now this isn't a complete list however it can help you when you're newly in a slump or in a slump that has lasted a while. Also please comment with any other ways that have helped you.
