Audiobooks: Are They Really A Good Reading Alternative?

When I first began my Bookstagram journey, I would have never considered or even thought about listening to an audiobook. Slowly, I began to realise that they would be the perfect alternative to a physical read when life was a little busier; and perfect for squeezing in some reading while I was on the go. We are all different readers, and we all enjoy varied reading alternatives. It is what makes reading one of the best and most unique hobbies there is. Here are a few ways in which audiobooks are beneficial, useful, and of course, a valid way of reading your books!

The first audiobook that I listened to was Greenlights by Matthew Mcconaughy. It was the perfect audiobook and it is one I will always recommend. Matthew voices the audiobook himself, which immediately draws you in. His own memoir in his own voice, perfectly presenting his own words. Something about this combination makes it so much more personal to not only himself but the reader also. I have since bought myself the physical book as I loved the read so much!

Perfect for on the go.

I think you can all agree with me, that sometimes life, work, and social activities can get in the way of our much loved and long-awaited reading time. If you’re often finding yourself with no time to sit and pick up your book, try picking up your current read in the form of an audiobook. Perfect for that morning commute to work, a daily dog walk or just those mundane (but unfortunately necessary) household activities such as cleaning and cooking. Not only will you be able to get your tasks done, but you’ll also be able to discover, continue, and fall in love with some new reads!

More involved within the story: Listening to an audiobook is a guaranteed way to become more involved with a story. Most audiobooks have various voices, sounds and characterisation that automatically make the book that much more exciting. It can make the story interactive, and give you that feeling that you are there with the characters inside the story.

Perhaps you are struggling with a book? I would definitely recommend picking up the audiobook and giving that a try. It might just take the immediately increased dramatisation that an audiobook often brings to really reel you in. It often makes you understand and enjoy the book that little bit more. You are often drawn immediately into another world, offering the perfect escape. If after all that, you still don’t enjoy the book? That’s okay too! We won’tlike every book - DNF!!!

Relaxation:

As silly as it sometimes sounds, I can’t always be bothered to physically pick up and hold my book. That is one huge advantage of an audiobook - the ability to just lay in bed, or sit on a comfortable sofa with your favourite brew and just listen. To enjoy your book without actually picking it up from your shelf. This is a complete and utter book and reading comfort, and it is just as valid as reading every word from a page. Reading needs to be something that is easily accessible to all and what better way for reading to be accessible than closing your eyes and not having to stop reading!

Mental health:

If we are feeling low or mentally drained, sometimes even picking up a book might be too much. Audiobooks can often be a huge comfort, and can really help towards improving difficult mental health days and low moments we face. We are able to listen to a calming audiobook, or even a podcast or something different entirely to help us switch off and relax our mind for the evening. It can be so deflating to have no energy to partake in our hobbies which are often the only escape we can find. Having a simple yet effective way of engaging in a good book can really be a fantastic way of ensuring that we don’t miss out.

We don’t always have to pick up and physically read a book for it to count as reading a book - this is a perfectly valid form of continuing with our favourite hobby!

I could go on and on explaining the benefits of audiobooks I’ve experienced and how they will always count towards our reading goals. Books are such a wonderful and diverse medium, and various ways to engage with reading will always be beneficial to different people. Be it for their lifestyle, their business. Or even their own disabilities. We can’t always read as much as we would like to (I know I don’t) so audiobooks have become the perfect alternative for me. They allow me to carry on with my day and still be able to enjoy an escape and get lost inside a book.

Whatever form or type of reading you do, it is all valid. We all have different ways in which we fall in love with books and this is what makes reading so amazing!
