Movie adaptations of books are either hit or miss within the book lover community. They can be really good or really bad, and for the last few years, it’s been pretty divided. The new year is in full swing, and with it will come a menagerie of new movie adaptations of books.
This article will cover confirmed movie adaptations as of this article being written and published. More news might come up later, and some of these might have passed by the time it is released, but for now, here are some of the book to movie adaptations coming out this year.
Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owen
Directed by Olivia Newman, this movie adaptation will star Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya, a young woman who, after being abandoned at a young age and learned to fend for herself in isolation, is suspected of murder after a popular person in their town winds up dead. Originally scheduled to be released in June, Where the Crawdads Sing is scheduled to come out in July 2022.
The Sky is Everywhere - Jandy Nelson
Jandy Nelson’s The Sky is Everywhere will be an Apple TV+ movie scheduled to come out February 11th. This movie follows Lennie, a musical prodigy, who has to deal with the sudden death of her sister, Bailey. Grace Kaufman will play Lennie, and some of her costars include Jason Segel, Cherry Jones, and Pico Alexander.
Death on the Nile - Agatha Christie
Director Kenneth Branagh returns with another Agatha Christie book adaptation in February. Played by Branagh, Hercule Poirot is tasked with investigating the murder of an heiress. Some notable names who star in the movie are Russell Brand, Gal Godot, and Annette Bening.
Salem’s Lot - Stephen King
A vampire classic from Stephen King comes to life via director and writer Gary Dauberman. Writer Ben Mears returns to his hometown, Jerusalem’s Lot, or “Salem’s Lot”, after 25 years in order to write a book about the Mastern House, with which he has had bad experiences with, until he discovers that something evil is afoot. Salem’s Lot is scheduled to come out September 9.
Persuasion - Jane Austen
Another Jane Austen novel is being adapted for Netflix sometime this year. Stars Dakota Johnson and Cosmo Jarvis join together on the screen as leads Anne Elliot and Captain Fredrick Wentworth. Directed by Cassie Cracknell, this movie will follow Anne, who has to decide between listening to her heart or letting go of the past. Other stars include Suki Waterhouse, Henry Golding, and Mia McKenna-Bruce.
