When I first joined Bookstagram, I kept seeing acronyms, words and phrases and had no idea what they meant. When I thought I’d started getting the hang of things, I tried to incorporate them into my language.
The first time I posted a story about not finishing a book, I wrote that I had DFS it. British readers will know that DFS is actually a furniture store… I immediately deleted and realised what I meant to say (or so I thought).
I reposted the story, feeling confident I’d fixed my mistake. But this time, I actually wrote that I had DNS the book. It took a whole week for me to realise that DNS means Do Not Resuscitate! Of course, the acronym I was actually looking for was DNF.
So, if you want to avoid a major bookish faux pas like me, here’s a quick guide to acronyms, words and phrases that you’ll find throughout the bookish community. If you can think of any more that other people might find useful, post them in the comments below!
